In 1199, the Kupferberg near Hettstedt was the cradle of copper slate mining in Mansfeld. Jakobus d. Ä. with a staff and a bag with a shell in the city coat of arms. The town church of St. Jakobi was built on St. James' Day from 1418 to 1517 and received its baroque furnishings after a major fire in the town. There are several depictions of James in the church: in the keystones and on the pulpit. The Protestant community has been reviving the pilgrimage tradition for several years: every year on St. James' Day on July 25th, a St. James' run takes place.

Like no other building, the St. Jakobi Church, a late-Gothic hall church, defines the silhouette of the city. Their construction took place from 1418 to 1517 and is thus one of the oldest buildings in the city. After its destruction in the fire catastrophe in 1697 was 1706 their reconstruction with a baroque hood. A last reconstruction in 1905, when the Türmer apartment was removed, a new organ, a new gallery, new windows and a new clock installed, finally gave the church its current appearance. The church is 63 meters high up to the top.
