The original medieval church was set on fire by a lightning strike. The current church was built in 1664-1670.

The country church of Askersund from the years 1664-70 is the best example of the district for the magnificent construction of the era of the great power. The church replaced a medieval wooden church, which had been destroyed by fire a few years earlier. The church has long been associated with the Oxenstierna-Soop family in Stjärnsund.

Askersund was granted city rights in 1643, but since the Middle Ages there has been both a marketplace and a church. When the city Askersund was founded, the existing church was outside the city limits, which is why within the city area soon a new church was built. The present city church Sofia Magdalena was built in 1778-80, as the older one had burned down a few years earlier.

The country church of Askersund is beautifully situated on a hill above Vättern, just outside the town center of Askersund. The history of today's rural church is closely linked to the Oxenstierna-Soop family, who built the manor house Stjärnsund in 1637 a few kilometers south of Akersund. When the medieval wooden church was destroyed by fire, the Oxenstierna-Soop family paid to build a new church, which was completed in 1670. The family then had a patronage for a long time, which meant, among other things, that she could appoint the pastor.
