The Esterweger Dose high moor area, which is under nature protection, is one of the largest contiguous high moor protection areas in northern Germany. Despite the designation of the Esterweger Dose as a nature reserve, peat may still be mined until 2036 - in the last peat mining area in Germany. The renaturation of the areas has already been decided and a continuation of peat extraction after the licenses have expired is therefore ruled out. New methods of growing the peat intended for the economy are being investigated at the University of Greifswald, among others.

On the other side of the canal is the nature reserve Esterweger Dose. It is one of the largest coherent moor sanctuaries in northern Germany. Although protected, peat is still mined in the area. However, in 2036 it should be over and the areas affected should be renatured.
