Werdau (originally: Werde, Werda, Wertha, Werdowe called) means "Uferaue", which lies at the Pleiße floodplain. The area was originally covered with forests and was fought for centuries by Slavs and Teutons. Under Charlemagne and Henry I, the Slavs were pushed back more and more and the advancing German settlers created the then "Werde", which is said to have received city rights in 1298, but only in 1304 was first mentioned in a document.
