The Matsunoo Shrine was founded in 701 by Hata-Cla. This clan immigrated to Japan from China and devoted himself to making sake. They also founded the more famous Fushimi Inari Shrine.

Legend has it that one family member saw a turtle bathing under a waterfall on a trip between Nagaoka and Kyoto in 794. This is considered a happy omen. That is why there are statues of turtles everywhere in this shrine.

In addition to the hall, we can also visit three gardens designed by Shigemori Mirei.

Unlike the Arashiyama district, this shrine is not overrun by tourists.
