    BUTTERSTONE

The butter stone in the Gattberg near Belm is a boulder, i.e. a large alien boulder. It was transported from Scandinavia to its present deposit by glaciers from the penultimate Ice Age, about 200,000 to 120,000 years ago.

Like large areas of the Wiehengebirge, the entire Gattberg is littered with such boulders.

The butter stone, roughly square in outline, whose name cannot be interpreted with certainty, is one of the largest. Its sides are about 3.40 m long, and it protrudes 1.40 m from the ground. Its weight including the

part hidden in the earth, will open

    estimated about 1400 quintals.
