The Széchenyi Chain Bridge (English: Széchenyi Chain Bridge; in common parlance, often only the Chain Bridge) is the oldest, best-known bridge on the Danube, providing a permanent connection between Buda and Pest, one of the symbols of the Hungarian capital and the first permanent bridge in Hungary. Its construction was initiated by Count István Széchenyi and financed by Baron György Sina, and he also made the largest donation for the construction of the bridge designed in the Classicist style. Due to the large investment, György Sina was granted the right to collect bridges for 87 years, which, however, lasted only 20 years, because after the 1867 compromise, the Hungarian government by law [1] he redeemed the bridge from Sina's son and heir, Sina Simon. [2] Work began in 1839, and the finished bridge was inaugurated on November 20, 1849, by Haynau. It was designed by William Tierney Clark of England and the construction was directed by Adam Clark of Scottish descent [3]. The space between the Tunnel and the Chain Bridge (Clark Adam Square) was named after the latter. The stone lions of the bridgeheads were made by the sculptor János Marschalkó from Levoča. The total cost of the construction of the bridge (preliminary works, redemption of the treasury buildings on the Buda side, compensation paid to Pest and Buda) amounted to HUF 6.575 million, of which the bridge itself cost 4.4 million, two thirds of the total cost.

The most important of the city's 9 bridges, because it is the oldest and also the city's landmark, is the Chain Bridge.
