From 1982 to 1987 peace, environmental and human rights groups of the GDR joined peace workshops in the Erlöserkirche, which was consecrated in 1892. To blues masses, an unconventional combination of worship and blues concert streamed unadapted youth from across the state - and numerous spies of the Stasi, who pursued the religious format with rebellious festival character irritated and looking for appropriate sanctions. The punk scene also found their way into the church with their music and protesters. The SED leadership harassed the Protestant church massively, but unsuccessfully, to prevent such events. In October 1989, voices of celebrities who demanded a democratic change in the GDR, such as Christa Wolf, Stefan Heym and Heiner Müller, were heard in the church. Today, a steel stele recalls the significance of the Church of the Redeemer for the development of a revolutionary situation in the GDR.
