The river here makes its way through the Bohemian massif. At the loop, the Danube turns in a tight 180 degree turn, then the river runs again in the east direction.

The Donauschlinge near Schögen shows in an impressive way how spectacular the Danube once made its way. In the foreground the model of a huge fish, which is supposed to testify to the abundance of fish of the Danube.

Current information: After a rock fall on the south bank between Haibach ob der Donau (Kobling district) and Aschach an der Donau (Kaiserau district), the Danube Cycle Path will be closed from June 8, 2021 until further notice.
You can bypass the lock as follows:

In Kobling you can take the Kobling-Obermühl ferry to the north side. From Obermühl you then cycle to Untermühl and here the Kaiserau-Untermühl ferry brings you back to the south bank.
    Ferry times:
    Ferry Kobling-Obermühl: June to August: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., September: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
    Kaiserau-Untermühl ferry: May to September: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Wonderful area for cycling and hiking!

ONLY FROM OCTOBER 26th NO FERRIES WILL OPERATE ........ AND THESE ARE IMPORTANT.

THEN IT ALSO HAPPENED THAT ADDITIONALLY THE SINGLE BIKE PATH ON SEVERAL SECTIONS ON THE SOUTH BANK WAS CLOSED.

Of course, one of the highlights on the Danube Cycle Path. Be sure to go up to the lookout point. But be careful: the path is very steep and rocky (some loose scree) and takes about 20-30 minutes. Sure footing and sturdy shoes are therefore essential. But the view is perfect!

The Schlögener Schlinge is a loop of the river in the upper Danube valley in Upper Austria, about halfway between Passau and Linz (between river kilometers 2180.5 and 2186.5 of the Danube) and the largest forced meander in Europe. The southern bank is in the municipality of Haibach ob der Donau and its district Schlögen, which gives the loop its name. In the north, the municipalities of Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis border with the village of Au and in the extreme east of Niederkappel with the village of Grafenau in the area of the Danube loop.
