St. Chrischona Television Tower

The Chrischona television tower in the municipality of Bettingen with the topographically favorable northeast location, on the Basel local mountain St. Chrischona, makes the tower the most important building block in the supply of northwestern Switzerland and was already used in the mid-1950s. The new 250 meter high, highly visible tower, with a striking tripod construction and the shank of a polygonal floor plan, was built from 1980 to 1983. It is the tallest freestanding structure in Switzerland. In the year of its commissioning in 1984, it was considered the most modern television tower in Europe due to many special technical solutions. In addition to the regular broadcasting service for radio and television, the operator company Swisscom also uses the tower for the mobile network. Furthermore, it also serves as a water tower and has measuring instruments, for example for the weather services. Apart from limited tours for groups of visitors, the transmission tower is not accessible to the public.
