The approximately 10 m high observation tower was built in 1883 in memory of the cloth merchant Eduard Schumacher from Viersen. Mr. Schumachers lived from 1832 to 1880 and was often a guest in Haiger because he appreciated the local climate as beneficial for his health. He is said to have enjoyed the view of Haiger from the location of the Edward Tower and therefore provided “a considerable amount of money” for the construction of the tower.
The memorial plaque on the slope of the tower is made of white marble with the inscription: "Eduard Schumacher from Viersen, b. Nov. 21, 1832, died April 27, 1880; built in memory of 1883 ".
