At the end of the last ice age around 10,000 years ago, a thick layer of ice prevented the salt deposit beneath Sperenberg from being raised. As the ice melted, groundwater dissolved the salt and transported it away, creating cavities that led to the formation of the Faulen Luchs and Krummen See lakes.
