Wilhelm Schubert (1813-1893) was a Lahr merchant, mayor, president of the chamber of commerce and member of the state parliament. He was one of the most important republicans in his city in the pre-March period and during the revolution of 1848/49. In his honor, this monument was erected with the inscription “The brave, truly liberal friends of the people”.

Wilhelm Schubert was elected revolutionary mayor in the Baden Revolution in 1849 with an overwhelming majority of 660 against 20 votes.
