At this point there was a sulfuric acid factory in 1814, later renamed Chemical Products Factory in Oranienburg. Their technical director from 1832-1852 Prof.Dr. Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge was and is the discoverer of tar colors. There is a statue in his memory in front of the building.
According to the plaque attached, he is credited with discovering carbolic acid (phenol) and aniline in coal tar. He also described the effects of atropine and caffeine.
Runge lived from 1794-1867 and is buried in the municipal cemetery. His monument by Stephan Möller was inaugurated in 1994.
