Memorial stele for the victims of Nazi military justice in Dünnwald
The slender memorial stele bears an inscription with a quote from former Wehrmacht deserter and peace activist Ludwig Baumann (1921-2018):
"What better thing can one do than betray the war?"

Since 1887 there was a target practice area here. Even today, the earth walls can be seen, which separated the individual shooting ranges of each other. In the 2nd World War, shooting practice was also carried out here. Between 1940 and 1943, over 20 men were executed and sentenced to death by a court. Shortly before the end, two young regime objectors were murdered here.

As memorials to the many dead, such monuments or war memorials remain very important to this day. "Now, Lord, you are releasing your servant in peace, according to your word..." it says in the so-called "Song of Simeon" (Luke 2:29). However, the people commemorated here did not depart in peace, but became victims of war and tyranny.
Many places and monuments encountered along the way are a testament—still significant and relevant today—to the horrors of war and tyranny. They all have, and this applies anew to every generation, two essential functions:
