The Big Lake Marina is part of the recreation area and located close to the campgrounds. You can rent a boat to enjoy the lake or for fishing. Fishing at the marina is not allowed though. There is also a store at the marina.

At the western shore of Big Lake, this is a great spot to spend the day. There is a parking lot, a pit toilet, a boat ramp and a hiking trail at Railroad Cove. The trail is part of the Railroad Grade Trail, a 19-mile route that follows the railroad tracks. Starting in 1918, the railroad hauled logs from the Apache National Forest and Fort Apache Indian Reservation. Later on, between 1964 and 1976, the White Mountain Scenic Railroad was used to transport tourists from McNary to Maverick, south of Big Lake. The railroad tracks where removed in 1982.

Lee Valley Reservoir is a great place to take a stroll along the lake shore or for fishing. The lake is home for trouts and also grayling. Hiking around the lake is about 1.8 miles. The trailhead has plenty of space to park your car and there is a pit toilet located at the parking lot. Please note that Lee Valley Reservoir is artificial fly and lure only!

This is a packed-dirt trail that goes through Sitgreaves National Forest, going into an aspen forest, passing by Reservation Tank and Pierce Mountain. This alternative path has some elevation gain until you get to Pierce Mountain. The trail is mostly shaded and well-marked, offering a nice forested ride.
