In the worldview of pre-Christian Greece, the Acheron River was significant as a river of the dead: in mythology, Charon, the ferryman to the underworld, lived on its banks. At burial, a coin was placed on each of the deceased's eyes; this was Charon's payment for safely crossing the river.

In summer it is worth walking along the river through the water. In spring the hiking trail next to it offers great views of the Acheron and leads deep into the mountains. Some paths into the mountains to the springs are signposted.

A very impressive construction feat. That wasn't all that long ago, so until 1974 you really had to walk up these wonderful stairs to the next village if you wanted to visit? Admirable. We were also very impressed by this tour, great views and barely visible from the other side, these stairs built into the mountain.

The staircase stretches over 1100 steps and overcomes a height difference of around 250 metres, including 39 narrow curves. Until the 1970s, this staircase was the only way to and from Vradēto; the current road connection was not completed until 1974.

On hot days it is wonderful to enter the coolness of the gorge via the water. Make sure you have good, non-slip shoes that you can use to enter the water and take a waterproof pouch for your phone. You can buy it on the spot. If you walk to the end, you must take into account that you have to wade/swim through the water (depending on your height) and that it is not always possible with a backpack. In spring and autumn this will be too cold through water. What was striking was that the water was very cold at the start, but further on in the gorge the temperature was more pleasant. We walked it at 39 degrees, and had no idea of this temperature until we returned. Blessed.

The staircase stretches over 1100 steps and overcomes a height difference of around 250 metres, including 39 narrow needle-point curves. Until the 1970s, this staircase was the only way to and from Vradēto; the current road connection was only completed in 1974. In addition to the impressive staircase, the view of the rocky flanks, the Mesariā Gorge and the Gradhīsta mountain range is also extremely impressive.
