That's right, bats hibernate here. It's an official bat hibernation area; the Hesse State Association for Cave and Karst Research regularly counts the bat population once a winter. Fire salamanders, cave parasitic wasps, and many insects also survive in the small tunnel. As part of the newly created Wichtelweg, the Wichtelloch has been renovated and the bridge has been recently restored. The ascent and descent are a little difficult as the steps are quite high, but both are still doable.
