Tips from the Community

Clive G
October 22, 2025, Arkle Summit

The summit of Arkle is a big stone covered dome, easy to climb onto after the narrow ridge, and the views are more restricted than on the ridge itself, but still worthwhile.

October 22, 2025, Arkle Ridge

The narrow ridge is an 'interesting' section - fine in good dry weather but caution is required in wet / windy weather. Quartzite becomes as slippery as soap when wet, and the narrowest part of the ridge is flat slabs of the stuff.

October 22, 2025, Ben Stack

The summit of Ben Stack is a wonderful viewpoint, Quinaq and Assynt to the south; Arkle and Foinaven across Loch Stack to the north; the coast to the west. This is a fine little mountain in an isolated lonely part of the far north west of Scotland.

True Scottish wilderness. The Bealach Horn is worth all the effort of getting there. Magestic Sutherland lies in front. The views on a clear day are incredible. The descent to Achfary from here on a bike is amazing!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any circular walks around Loch Stack?

Yes, there are circular routes available. For a challenging day out that includes a summit, the Ben Stack from Loch Stack loop is a great option. It’s a 7.5-mile (12 km) trail that takes you through the rugged terrain surrounding the loch. Be prepared for some pathless and boggy sections.

What is the terrain like on the hikes?

The terrain around Loch Stack is classic of the North West Highlands. Expect a mix of conditions, often within the same hike. Lower-level paths can be very boggy and require crossing streams, while ascents of mountains like Ben Stack and Arkle involve steep, rocky sections. Good navigation skills are essential as many parts of the routes are pathless.

Are there any easier or family-friendly walks in the area?

While the region is known for its challenging peaks, there are a couple of easier options. These routes tend to be shorter and avoid major ascents, but they can still involve boggy ground. For a less strenuous experience, consider exploring the lower-level paths along the glens, which still offer a powerful sense of the wild landscape.

Can I take my dog on the trails around Loch Stack?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails, but the area is home to livestock and sensitive wildlife like ground-nesting birds. It is crucial to keep your dog under close control at all times, and on a lead where necessary, especially during lambing season (spring) and the deer stalking season (late summer to autumn).

How difficult is the hike up Arkle compared to Ben Stack?

Arkle is a significantly more demanding hike than Ben Stack. The route to Arkle's two summits is longer, involves more ascent, and includes a ridge walk with some light scrambling. The Arkle from Achfary trail is rated as difficult. In contrast, Ben Stack is often called a 'perfect mountain in miniature'—it's a shorter, though still steep, moderate hike.

What is a 'bothy' and are there any near Loch Stack?

A bothy is a simple, unlocked shelter, free for anyone to use. They are a common feature in the Scottish Highlands, offering refuge for hikers. There is a well-known bothy on the shores of Loch Stack, which was historically used by the local crofting community. It provides a welcome haven from the elements and fantastic views.

Is wild camping permitted around Loch Stack?

In line with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, wild camping is generally permitted in the Loch Stack area. It's a superb location for it, thanks to the remote and wild landscape. When camping, be sure to follow the 'leave no trace' principles: camp away from roads and buildings, be considerate of wildlife, and take all your litter with you.

Where is the best place to park for hiking?

Parking is limited and informal. For hikes up Ben Stack, there are small lay-bys along the A838 road near the southern end of Loch Stack where the trail begins. For Arkle, parking is usually found near the hamlet of Achfary. Arrive early to secure a spot, especially on weekends, and park considerately without blocking any access.

What kind of wildlife might I see while hiking?

The remote and unspoiled nature of the area makes it excellent for wildlife spotting. Keep an eye out for red deer on the hillsides, particularly during the autumn rut when you might hear them roaring. Raptors, such as eagles and buzzards, are also frequently seen circling the high peaks.

Are there any other points of interest for hikers in the wider area?

Yes, if you're interested in the unique geology of the Highlands, the Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve is a worthwhile visit. It features excellent walking trails across a dramatic landscape with indoor exhibits explaining the area's ancient geological history, including the famous Moine Thrust.
