During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 I stayed at home in Cockermouth, Cumbria. When the restrictions started to ease, exercise opportunities were unlimited but hiking big/remote/gnarly mountains was still strongly discouraged by Mountain Rescue England and Wales. In order to #ExploreLocal and keep myself and the rural communities in Cumbria safe, whilst scratching my adventure itch, I came up with the idea to hike the 116 Wainwright Outlying Fells. Many people have heard of the Wainwright fells – the category of hill/mountain identified by Alfred Wainwright and chronicled in his series of books – A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. But not many people realise he created another book entitled the Outlying Fells of Lakeland. They’re on the fringes of the national park further from the honeypot areas of the Lake District but all still beautiful as they look out onto big fells in the centre of Lakeland. The smallest is a mere 53m but the highest is 621m (average 370m).
