Sligo Way – Hiking through Yeats Country

Stretching 80 kilometres (50 miles) across County Sligo from Lough Talt in the Ox Mountains to Dromahair in County Leitrim, the Sligo Way offers a brilliant hike through Yeats Country. Combining high moorland, lough views and literary landscapes, the trail, split into four days in this Collection, presents relatively easy terrain that’s accessible for all levels of fitness and experience.

The Sligo Way provides steady walking with modest elevation gain through changing landscapes. Its open moorland enjoys magnificent views east to Ben Bulben, north across Donegal Bay to Slieve League, and west to the Nephin range.

On your way from Lough Talt to Lough Gill, you’ll gain an insight into the region’s rich past, with megalithic tombs and W.B. Yeats’ Isle of Innisfree among the historic sites. Even if you’re not a literary history buff, the route's pleasant woodland, peaceful gravel tracks and lough views are worth the trip alone.

There are limited accommodation options on this route, so I’d recommend camping. Due to the gentle terrain and forgiving surfaces, the Sligo Way can be undertaken at any time of the year. However, due to the variable Irish weather, I’d recommend spring to autumn, especially if you’re camping.

The start of the route is not easily accessible by public transport, with the closest bus stop in Ballina. However, the final destination in Dromahair is serviced by the local bus route.
