Sitting on Dublin's doorstep, the Dublin Mountains Way delivers a brilliant upland escape without needing to venture far from the city. This two-day Collection takes you across varied terrain, from forested trails, open ridges and along quiet country roads. The sweeping views over Dublin Bay, the Irish Sea and the city’s famous Spire are the cherry on the cake.

Running east to west from Shankill to Tallaght, the route threads through Coillte forests, past ancient archaeological sites, and over upland terrain that’s exposed to the elements. You'll experience the full character of Dublin's Wicklow foothills, including woodland shade and summit panoramas.

The trail is well waymarked with the standard yellow walking man symbol, though some road sections require attention. Expect a mixture of surfaces, including forest tracks, tarmac stretches and rocky mountain paths. Sturdy boots and all-weather gear are essential.

The hilly terrain requires a decent level of fitness as there are occasional steep ascents to tackle. Split over two days, there aren’t a huge number of accommodation options in the mountains, so I’d recommend camping.

The hike is best undertaken between late spring and early autumn when conditions are more predictable. Accessible by public transport, it delivers big views, varied terrain, and the satisfaction of traversing these scenic foothills in just two days.
