Glyndŵr’s Way – hiking in the footsteps of a Welsh hero

One of Wales’ three National Trails, Glyndŵr’s Way is a wonderful hiking journey across the relatively unexplored hills and valleys of Mid Wales. It’s an adventure that discovers the sweeping moorland of the Cambrian Mountains, atmospheric forests, sparkling llyns, delightful river valleys and historic sites and settlements.

The route links various places associated with the 15th-century rebellion of Welsh commander Owain Glyndŵr, who sought to end English rule in Wales and restore Welsh sovereignty. Having successfully gained control of much of the country by 1404, Glyndŵr was proclaimed Prince of Wales and established his first parliament in Machynnlleth. However, English forces fought back; by 1409 they’d seized much of the land and Glyndŵr and his troops were forced into hiding among Wales’ upland regions. While it’s thought that Glyndŵr died sometime in 1415, he was never captured, nor betrayed by his followers. To this day, he remains a hero of Welsh folklore.

You’ll start and end in towns once sacked by Glyndŵr’s forces: Knighton on the Anglo –Welsh border and Welshpool on the River Severn. These towns link the Way to one of Wales’ other National Trails, the Offa’s Dyke Path. Both are easy to reach: Knighton is on the Heart of Wales railway line between Llanelli and Craven Arms, while Welshpool is on the Cambrian Line between Shrewsbury and Dovey Junction.

This is quite a remote adventure at times, though its status as a National Trail means that there are accommodation options, and usually food options, at the end of each stage (see individual descriptions). Careful planning and advance booking are recommended and you’ll want to carry plenty of food and drink to keep you going between supply points.

Spring through to autumn is the best time to take to the trails, as services will be open and conditions more favourable. Nevertheless, you’ll need to prepare for all weathers regardless of season: wear quality hiking shoes and pack warm layers, waterproofs and sun protection.
