The Trollheimen Triangle is a classic three-day loop linking the DNT cabins at Gjevilvasshytta, Jøldalshytta and Trollheimshytta. Set in central Norway, it’s one of the country’s most popular hut-to-hut hikes – scenic, well-marked and easy to organise, with full-day stages and comfortable huts at each stop.

The trail takes you through a varied landscape shaped by both oceanic and continental climates. Expect a mix of open valleys, birch forests, alpine bogs and rocky ridgelines, with lakes and rivers throughout. The terrain isn’t technical, but the weather can shift quickly, so layers and good boots are essential.

Each leg of the loop offers something different. The route from Gjevilvasshytta to Jøldalshytta runs through quiet pastures and birch woods. Day two offers two options: a more demanding route over the Trollhetta ridge, or a gentler crossing via Geithetta. The final stretch between Trollheimshytta and Gjevilvasshytta is broad and open, with views back toward the peaks.

All three huts are part of the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). In summer (late June to mid-September), they’re staffed and serve hot meals – though you can also bring your own food. You’ll need a DNT membership and red key to stay.

The loop starts and ends at Gjevilvasshytta, west of Oppdal. Trains from Trondheim reach Oppdal in 2–2.5 hours. During high season, bus 580 connects Oppdal to the hut on Thursdays and Sundays. Outside those times, it’s possible to drive and park at the hut, or share a taxi.

It’s a great option for hikers who want a mountain experience without the hassle of carrying camping equipment – just a backpack, sturdy boots and a GPS track to follow.
