The Limfjord has not always been as we see it today. On the west coast it was landlocked for many centuries, until February 1825. Around 200 years ago, in fact, a devastating flood happened: most of the region’s farmland got destroyed, causing an economic crisis. Around 800 people drowned. And significantly, the land itself changed so much that another opening to the sea on the west coast was formed. For the first time in history, you could navigate from western to eastern Jutland and vice versa, and the northern part of Jutland known as Vendsyssel-Thy became an island.
The February flood of 1825, also known as the Great Hallig Flood (Große Halligflut) in Germany, lasted three days and created a possibility that was already there in the past. King Cnut the Great for example was able to navigate the Limfjord in 1027, although from an ancient canal that is now the Ferring Sø lake. The roads around the Lim fjord became more and more important for commercial reasons, and on some of the same old routes you’ll be pedalling on this Collection.
Prepare to embark on a journey through some of Denmark’s most beautiful nature. Northern Jutland is also home to a unique birdlife, small islands, and lovely beaches with plenty of opportunities for water sports. Food lovers will find plenty to savor, from freshly caught oysters and mussels to other seafood delicacies prepared using traditional recipes.
Although the path around the Limfjord is primarily paved, with roughly 85% made up of asphalt and the remaining 15% consisting of easy gravel, unpaved white roads, or mixed surfaces, it’s still best to equip your bike with wide, durable tires. These will provide added comfort and stability, particularly if you’re carrying full bikepacking gear.
Many of the towns and villages you’ll pass through aren’t major tourist destinations. If you plan to avoid the bigger cities, booking your overnight stays ahead of time is wise. Camping is another practical alternative: bringing a tent and sleeping bag is enough to sleep outdoors without much trouble. Keep in mind that riding more than 600 kilometers (370 mi) is no small feat. Breaking the route into 12 stages works well, allowing riders of various fitness levels to complete the trip. The toll on your body after nearly two weeks of cycling is real, so it’s important to pace yourself and even consider dividing it into shorter segments.
The Limfjord Route begins and finishes in Thisted, which sits at the northern end of the Thy railway line. This makes it easily accessible by train from many major Danish cities. While Thisted’s small airport ceased regular service back in 2007, flying into Aalborg is a good alternative, letting you adjust your route’s start and finish as needed.
The best time to take on the Limfjord Route is during the milder seasons: late spring, summer, or early autumn. October brings beautiful autumn foliage, but also colder air and fewer daylight hours. The terrain remains relatively flat, never rising above 100 meters (328 ft), so you won’t need to tackle steep climbs. That said, like much of Denmark, the region is often windy, so prepare for breezes both helping and hindering your ride. Along the trail, you'll pass by serene lakes, winding rivers, and stunning fjords, perfect for a cooling dip on warmer days.
More than anything, this is a route that offers a rich, unforgettable ride through Denmark’s northern landscapes. Discover some of the region’s finest coastlines, heathlands, forests, and open countryside!
