Big skies and fell lines: the Arctic taiga beckons! While this majestic corner of the world is only rideable for a few months each year, that short window makes the experience all the more special. This Collection takes you through the old-growth forests and wild, open landscapes of Pyhä-Luosto National Park in northern Finland.

The full loop runs for approximately 83 miles (135 km) with a total of 2,952 feet (900 m) of elevation gain. It’s doable in two days, but I recommend spreading it over three to make the most of the experience. The terrain is non-technical and accessible to most riding levels. Apart from one 3.7 mile (6 km) stretch of narrow singletrack, the route sticks mostly to gravel and tarmac. A sturdy gravel bike with at least 40mm tyres is ideal, but if you prefer a more comfortable ride through the singletrack section, go for a hardtail or full-sus.

Camping is permitted and free along the route, and each stage starts or ends at a camping ground. Expect access to drinking water at most camp spots (unless stated otherwise). Tap water is always drinkable in Finland, and locals are generally happy to help refill your bottles. Just be sure to avoid lighting fires during high forest fire alerts. If bikepacking isn't your thing, accommodation is available in the holiday villages of Pyhä and Luosto. Grocery stores can be found in Pyhä, Pelkosenniemi and Luosto, and there are some good cafés and restaurants along the way too.

As for timing: the rideable window is relatively narrow. Trails are generally clear by early July, but that’s also peak season for the infamous räkkä – swarms of mosquitoes, black flies, midges and horseflies. For a more pleasant ride, aim for mid-August to mid-October. Early June is another option, though increasingly unpredictable due to shifting climate patterns.

In August, daytime temperatures tend to range between 15 and 23°C, dropping to 0–10°C by late September with nights already below freezing. A -7°C rated sleeping bag should be sufficient. Summer nights begin to shorten around September, and with that, the northern lights become a real possibility. Mobile coverage is patchy throughout the route. In case of emergency, call 112 or use the 112 app, which automatically sends your location to emergency services. Solo riders may also want to carry a personal locator beacon for added safety.

The Collection crosses reindeer herding grounds, so please respect local guidelines and any cabin use policies. Wildlife is generally shy and avoids humans, bear or wolf encounters are extremely unlikely. And finally, don’t forget a power bank or a fully charged GPS computer to keep you on track.

That’s everything you need to know, now go and enjoy your Arctic adventure!
