The author John Banville once wrote, “Every island is a story waiting to be told.” With this quote in your pocket and your panniers packed, you can be sure to find plenty of stories along Finland’s Archipelago Trail. With over 40,000 islands and islets, Finland's southwestern archipelago, Saaristo, is a cyclist's dream. The Archipelago Trail offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in this magical landscape, where the rhythm of the waves, expansive sea views, and rich Finnish culture converge.

Your adventure begins in Turku, Finland’s former capital until 1812. As you leave the urban landscape behind, the trail quickly immerses you in the open air, with the sparkling blue sea on one side and the dark green silhouettes of forested islands on the other. You’ll cycle through a chain of captivating islands: Parainen, Nagu, Korrpoo, Houtskär, and Iniö, each with its own distinct charm. These islands invite you to discover off the bike as well, with a mix of cultural heritage, outdoor activities, historical landmarks, and peaceful nature trails.

The full trail covers around 250 kilometres and is typically completed in two to five days. In this Collection, I have proposed four stages, but you can choose whether to complete it in fewer or more days, depending on your pace and interests. The route is well-supported by a network of ferries and bridges connecting the islands. All ferries are free of charge, except for the crossing between Houtskär and Iniö. Reservations aren't required, and bicycles are welcome aboard. While the trail can be cycled in either direction, this Collection follows a clockwise route.

Finland is renowned for being bike-friendly. Along the Archipelago Trail, you'll find "Welcome Cyclist" accommodations, including campsites, B&Bs, hotels, as well as numerous restaurants and cafés. These all provide ideal spots to rest, enjoy local delicacies, and soak in the serene island atmosphere.

The best time to cycle the Archipelago Trail is during the summer months, from late May to early September, when daylight extends well into the evening, and the weather is warm, allowing you to hop off your bike and jump in the sea. However, weather conditions can be unpredictable, so it's advisable to pack accordingly. The route is mostly paved, but includes some gravel sections, so it's best suited for a touring or gravel bike.

So, what are you waiting for? Grease the chain, check your tyre pressure, adjust your saddle, and set off to discover the magic of the Archipelago Trail.
