Catholicism had disappeared from the Portsmouth area from the time of the Reformation until after the French Revoloution when French priests, fleeing from Paris, found their way to the English port. This 59 mile pilgrimage links up a number of impressive Catholic churches from Portsmouth, north to reach the Shrine to St Joseph, in Farnborough.

The route is a combination of sections from other long distance paths along disused railway tracks, canal tow paths, over farmland and along quiet roads. The route ends at Farnborough built by the Empress Eugénie in 1881 as a mausoleum for her husband (Napoleon III and their son). She was later buried with them.

You can get more information on this pilgrimage route from the British Pilgrimage Trust website (britishpilgrimage.org/portfolio/st-josephs-way).
