Pure enjoyment – over the Alps on the Alpe Adria cycle path

The majestic mountains of Carinthia sparkle in the sunlight and raging rivers meet lush green meadows as you journey along the cycle path. You feel a sense of calm as you take in the surrounding landscapes, while linking one rustic alpine village to the next. Slowly the landscape evolves; alpine charm blends into Mediterranean flair. Enjoying an espresso, you indulge in a spot of people watching from your seat in the historic square. Back in the saddle, you gaze out at turquoise rivers and consider that, at the end of the route, the beautiful Adriatic awaits. If you’re wondering what route can possibly combine all of this, the answer is the Alpe Adria cycle path.

Across eight stages, the long-distance trail connects Salzburg with the Italian coastal resort of Grado. Although the route involves crossing the Alps, steep, strenuous mountain stages are conspicuously absent. Instead, the cycle path follows old railway lines and leads through numerous tunnels, making it a true pleasure tour with many cultural and culinary delights.

After starting in the Mozart city of Salzburg, the picturesque mountain world of Carinthia beckons. From Böckstein, you’ll cross under the high mountain region of the Hohe Tauern using the Tauernbahn’s ‘Regio Biking’ carriages. Once at the Italian border town of Tarvis, you’ll cycle on one of Europe’s most popular cycle paths, the disused track of the old K+K railway. Beyond this, you’ll travel via Udine and Aquileia to finish at the Adriatic. Along the way, peaks, waterfalls, gorges, castles, mountain railways and some exciting museums await.

Both Salzburg and Grado are connected to the regional and supra-regional railway network, making it easy to arrive and depart by train. An advantage of the Alpe Adria cycle path running almost continuously along a railway line is that you can pick off stages individually, should you wish, with the bicycle carriage provided by the Micotra-Sprinter. It connects Trieste, Udine and Villach and runs several times a day. Accommodation options along the route are also numerous, giving you plenty of opportunity to rest and recharge.
