Set off on an adventure by rail and on foot along the Northumberland Line to discover a breathtaking world of sleepy coastal towns, undulating dunes, sandy beaches, and wooded valleys.

Travelling by train to a hike feels a bit like setting off on a holiday. Not only can you relax and enjoy the sights, but it also gives you flexibility when planning and while on the walk too. Plus, kids love train journeys!

We’ve put together a Collection of fantastic hiking routes that can be accessed by train in less than 35 minutes from the centre of Newcastle. There’s something to please everyone, from short walks suitable for families to longer hikes that will take a full day.

You’ll walk along the spectacular coastal path between Newbiggin-on-the-Sea and Seaton Sluice, follow the picturesque meanders of the Seaton Burn and Wansbeck rivers, and explore the farmland and prairies around Seaton Delaval. You can also follow in the footsteps of Ashington’s sporting heroes, discover the rich mining and maritime heritage of the area, and visit fascinating historic sites, such as Seaton Delaval Hall and Bothal Castle.

The Northumberland line reopened its doors to passengers for the first time in over 60 years at the end of 2024. Services along the line operate twice every hour during the day from Monday to Saturday, while they run hourly in the evenings and on Sundays. It takes around 35 minutes to travel from Newcastle to the line’s terminus in Ashington. Newcastle is easy to reach by rail from just about anywhere on the Northern Trains network.
