On the shore of a tranquil mountain lake, the panorama is reflected in the mirror-still water. You see jagged rock faces and blue sky, while in the distance are the sounds of bird calls. When hiking in the Surselva, you’re in a landscape that will work its magic all the way into your heart.

The region boasts a mixture of wild gorges, scenic high-altitude trails and quiet high valleys. Whether the spectacular Rhine Gorge, airy ridges or idyllic mountain lakes, every trail leads to breathtaking views. The variety means there’s something for everyone, from short strolls to challenging day hikes and weekend-long adventures.

This Collection includes superb sights, like Lag Serein, embedded in a barren high alpine landscape; the Greina Plateau, with its meandering watercourses; and the hike from Ilanz through the impressive Rhine Gorge. The Caplutta Sogn Benedetg (Chapel of St Benedict) and the traces of historic mining near Trun are just two examples of the exciting cultural sites awaiting discovery.

Many of these routes can easily be reached by public transport via the Rhaetian Railway or the Bus alpin. Consult the weather forecast before setting out, especially at higher altitudes, and it’s also worth looking into the mountain huts and refreshment stops along the route. Have fun discovering and enjoying the hiking highlights in the Surselva.
