Varied stretches of coastline, interesting ferry ports, historic towns and numerous seaside resorts with fantastic beaches – the German Baltic Sea coast offers this and more. On this route you explore a unique coastal landscape and discover lengthy beaches, precious bird paradises, important Hanseatic cities, fascinating cliffs and pristine coastal forests. Unlike the North Sea coast, however, the cycling here isn’t flat; you’ll have hilly stretches to deal with too.
D-Route 2 is part of the Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route, which runs for a total of over 9,000 kilometres (5,600 mi) through nine countries – always along the Baltic Sea, of course. In the German section, you start on the island of Usedom. From there, the route takes you via Greifswald and Stralsund to the island of Rügen, which you cycle around once. You venture on via the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula to Warnemünde, via several Baltic Sea resorts and the Hanseatic city of Wismar, to Travemünde Strand. This is where the Holstein section of the journey begins which, as well as a detour around the island of Fehmarn, leads north to the German-Danish border near Flensburg, where D-Route 2 ends.
The route is part of the German Cycling Network and an integral part of the Federal Government's National Cycling Plan. The 12 long-distance cycle routes and the German Unity Cycle Route connect all regions of Germany with north-south and west-east connections. For this purpose, existing long-distance cycle routes, river routes or themed routes are interconnected, linked at attractive and exciting locations and integrated into the existing Eurovelo network.

The final stage of the D-Route 2 is coming up. The views of bays and fjords are particularly attractive. The nature reserves Geltinger Birk and Höftland Bockholmwik offer particularly wonderful insights into the landscape that you can hardly get enough of.
