For cyclists, Bormio is immediately evocative of the Stelvio. Enthusiasts come from all over the world to conquer the second highest paved pass in the Alps, made famous by the Giro d'Italia and the champions who have triumphed on its slopes.
Photographer, athlete and alpine cycling expert Alain Rumpf went there with one goal: to explore the region... without climbing the Stelvio. For 3 days, passionate local cyclists took him to discover the hidden gems of Bormio: two gravel loops and a road bike Tour that make up this Collection.
Who's it for?
Despite their short distances, these Tours are aimed at fit cyclists with an experience of the mountains. In the Alps, the metres climbed count far more than the kilometres travelled.
“The gravel loops combine tarmac roads and trails that are often steep and technical. This type of riding requires specific equipment.” explains Alain. His recommendations:
- small gears (Alain uses a 30x40)
- 45mm wide minimum tires, tubeless
- off-road shoes that allow you to walk, if necessary, on the steepest and most technical sections
- clothing suitable for rapidly changing high-altitude weather
When should you go?
The Tours in this Collection take you up to 2800m. Wait until the snow has melted and set off between July and September, taking the weather conditions into account.
Ready for your next adventure in the Italian Alps? In the words of Alain: “Bormio is a lively town that oozes Alpine culture. You'll meet mountain enthusiasts and many, many cyclists. There are plenty of excellent restaurants, welcoming bars and bike-friendly hotels. You'll feel at home!”
