Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is one of the UK's finest mountains. It's 1,085-metre summit makes it the highest peak in Wales, as well as Britain’s highest south of the Scottish Highlands. The summit sees around half a million pairs of boots every year. To put that into context, that’s five times the number that climb Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak. Add in the 140,000 that chug up to the summit on the Snowdon Mountain Railway and you soon realise why there are often queues at the top during peak season.

However, make no mistake about it, Yr Wyddfa is a majestic mountain. Yes, there’s a café on top and, yes, the summit can be a little crowded and, yes, there are relatively easy ways up, but the sheer size and grandeur of the massif means you can still have an adventure to rival the very best on our shores. The variety found on its many exciting ridges, legendary subsidiary peaks, sparkling llyns and atmospheric cwms means that Yr Wyddfa has something for everyone.

You see, to think of Yr Wyddfa as one peak, a single objective, a place to visit once and tick off, is completely missing the point. It's a complex beast, its main summit merely the central point of an immense system of ridges and trails. Seen from above, its shape almost resembles a starfish, with five principal limbs and dozens of little offshoots. In practical terms, this all means that, unlike with Ben Nevis, there are at least a dozen routes that hikers can take to reach the top.

Whether you’re just finding your feet as a hillwalker or you’re a confident scrambler looking to push your grade, there’s something for you here. If you value the camaraderie of experiencing the mountain with the masses or you’re seeking solitude, Yr Wyddfa has a route for you.

This Collection Features 14 routes to the summit: half are the classic hiking routes, while the other half involve scrambling terrain of varying difficulty. Special mention has to go to the Yr Wyddfa Horseshoe that, with its famously narrow Crib Goch ridge, is one of the quintessential mountain experiences in Britain. Other than the Clogwyn y Person route, all the scrambles are grade ones and are typically tackled without climbing equipment. Clogwyn y Person is a challenging grade three scramble and only for the very experienced. Many would choose the reassurance of a rope. If in doubt, hire an instructor.

There are many good accommodation options in the area around Yr Wyddfa and the Snowdon Sherpa bus services are a great option to get to the start of the routes. If starting from Pen-y-Pass, it's very unlikely you'll get a parking space. There's always the option of staying at the youth hostel, or in Nant Peris or Llanberis and using bus services to access the top of the pass.
