A cycling trip in Iceland is a must-do for any cyclist. Forged by ice and fire, this island is often talked about because of its frequent volcanic eruptions. The volcanism and geothermal energy of this geologically young land are seen as both a curse and a blessing. Volcanoes and lava flows can devastate villages and cause a complete shutdown of international air traffic; they can also change the climate. In 1786, a few years before the French Revolution, a gigantic ash cloud was partly responsible for poor wheat harvests, thus impacting the social and political movements of an entire continent. The famine that followed accelerated the course of history. Revolutions often arise when the people have empty stomachs.

Iceland is the only European country to have a neutral carbon footprint. All the energy residents need is under their feet, helping Reykjavik to become the only capital in Europe with zero CO2 emissions. Except, of course, when a volcano erupts on its soil.

This Collection ventures into less frequented parts of Iceland. The highlands and the northwest fjords have the fewest inhabitants per square kilometre in the country – which is already very sparsely populated. During this week-long, 524-kilometre (325 mi) adventure, you won’t encounter crowds.

In addition to the splendid fjords that you discover from the fourth stage, you’ll visit the
immense Gullfoss waterfall and the Langjökull glacier. The best thing for me, apart from the incredible landscapes, was seeing the seabird species that are uncommon in our latitudes.

It’s easy to find accommodation as you’ll pass through extraordinary refuge lodges as well as guest houses, campsites and hotels, even in the small villages. The Icelanders know how to welcome. During the summer period, you must book your overnight stays in advance. You can buy food at fuel stations, which are well distributed along the route and offer a wide choice of refreshments. As you might expect, cold, snow, rain and wind are a major concern. The weather was a hot topic of conversation when we met other cyclists. For many Icelanders, the fact that crazy people cycle through their country remains a mystery.

For the best chance of good weather, visit in summer. Choose your weather window carefully before packing. Gloves and warm, waterproof clothing to protect from the cold and rain are essential. A tent and camping gear are useful but not obligatory as you can sleep inside at each stage. This Collection is primarily aimed at experienced cyclists. It’s essential to have wheels with enough tread to cope with the many dirt and gravel roads. Hiking and gravel biking are the two options to choose for this trip.

To get there, fly to Reykjavik International Airport. From there, several bus services connect the main points of interest and accommodate your bikes in their holds or on bike racks. Reykjavik Excursions is the most reliable company. For timetables, see: re.is
