The Piccola Cassia guides you from Bologna to the heart of the Apennines, promising a rich tapestry of history and nature. You set off from the Po Valley and weave through the territories of Modena and Bologna. Ancient Romans travelled this route to reach the central Po Valley, ascending from Pistoia towards Modena and Bologna.

In the Middle Ages, this path was one of many roads leading to Rome, intersecting with the Via Francigena. Along this journey, you'll encounter various landmarks from that period, such as the Monteveglio Abbey, Serravalle Castle, Sant'Apollinare, the villages of Badia, Santa Lucia, Pieve di Roffeno, and numerous other historical buildings and centres.

Eventually, you'll walk along a stretch of the Gothic Line – a massive fortification system constructed between 1943 and 1944 by the German army. Here, you'll traverse sites that witnessed intense clashes between German and US troops during the Second World War.

The natural landscape offers equally diverse vistas. Beginning in the fertile Po Valley, you'll explore breathtaking views of the gully-laden hills and vineyards, culminating in the dense woods and expansive meadows of the Apennine heights.

Given the Italian setting, indulging in local food and wine is a must. Don't miss tasting the delectable Parmigiano Reggiano, typical cured meats from Modena and Bologna, Pignoletto wine, and many other local delicacies.

The original start point is Nonantola, accessible by car or certain bus lines. A recent addition is a ‘bypass’ of approximately 30 kilometres (18 mi) leading to Monteveglio from Bologna to enhance hiking accessibility. This solution forms the proposed first stage of this Collection. If you prefer starting from Nonantola, you can find directions (in Italian) here: piccolacassia.it/itinerary/mappe-tempi-distanze.

In my proposed second stage, Piccola Cassia is divided into two alternatives after Monteveglio. The western part proceeds towards the castle of Serravalle and the historic village of San Prospero, while the eastern variant heads towards the villages of Borgo Stella and Badia. If you choose to explore the eastern section, the entire route is available at komoot.com/tour/1388752082.

For the subsequent two stages to Fanano, the route is shared for both versions (western and eastern) of Piccola Cassia. Upon reaching Fanano, you can take bus line 730 to Vignola (timetables available on the website). From Vignola, trains are available to Bologna or your preferred destination.

Each stage concludes in villages where you can find accommodation. However, as facilities are not numerous, it's advisable to check availability before your departure. Some suggestions can be found on the official website.

All that remains is to pack your rucksack and embark on the ancient route once traversed by merchants and armies, meandering through captivating woods and valleys!
