The Sentiero delle Orobie Orientali (Eastern Orobie Path) is a beautiful loop that begins and ends in Ardesio commune in Bergamo. It passes through the fascinating Orobie Bergamasche Park, through the Brembana, Seriana and Scalve valleys in Italy.

Also known as the Orobie loop, this enchanting path crosses the Bergamo province from one end to the other, connecting all the Italian Alpine Club (Club Alpino Italiano, CAI) refuges on the southern side of the Orobie.

The Eastern Orobie Path immerses you in the wildest areas of these mountains, with fantastic views over the landscape. You’ll encounter diverse local flora and fauna such as marmots, chamois and ibex.

The Anello delle Orobie follows the classic Eastern Orobie Path, except for the first and last stages. This Collection allows you to avoid the via ferrata della Porta, a stretch that requires special equipment.

The route is approximately 90 kilometres (56 mi) long with just over 5,000 metres (16,400 ft) of elevation gain. On average, this itinerary runs at 2,100 metres (6,900 ft) above sea level. The highest point is Ol Simal at 2,700 metres (8,900 ft).

The Eastern Orobie Path has eight stages, which you can combine to reduce the walking days. You’ll stay at seven refuges along the route. The recommended period to walk the path is in summer when the refuges are open.

If you decide to combine the stages, carefully evaluate the distance, elevation gain and the terrain you have to cross. The path winds along hiking routes, but there are some sections on steep terrain, with gullies and short sections equipped with chains.

The refuges along the path are Alpe Corte, Rifugio Laghi Gemelli, Rifugio Fratelli Calvi, Baroni al Brunone, Coca, Curò and Albani. I advise you to book your overnight stays in advance, especially in the height of summer when the area is very busy.

In Ardesio, it’s worth requesting a Sentiero delle Orobie Orientali passport, a credential that gets you stamps in the refuges and a certificate of completion at the end.

To reach Ardesio by car, ake the A4 motorway, exit at the Bergamo toll booth and take the provincial road 35 towards Alzano Lombardo-Valle Seriana. Continue towards Clusone and Valbondione and you’ll arrive in Ardesio after a short distance. If you prefer to use public transport, you can take a bus from Bergamo station in the direction of Ardesio.

The Sentiero delle Orobie Orientali originally started from Valcanale and reached the Alpe Corte refuge after a short walk. In this collection I propose the circular variant that starts from the center of Ardesio and gradually immerses itself in the mountain environment.

This stage leads to the head of the Seriana valley, to the Curò refuge, one of the most popular in the Orobie area, an enchanting environment suitable for not too demanding trips. The refuge is located near the sources of the Serio river, which five times a year offer the spectacle of the Serio waterfalls
