Hiking with sweeping views over the land of a thousand mountains is an incredible experience. The 34-kilometre (21 mi) Hochsauerland ridge trail takes you to stunning panoramas, through tranquil forests and across beautiful heathland in three stages. The climbs to the mountain ridges aren’t too steep and are easily manageable. Once you reach the top, breathtaking views await.

This hike takes you to unique landscapes. You'll hike up to the lofty Kahler Asten and the Astenturm, the highest point in the Sauerland, with views as far as the Brocken in the Harz Mountains on a clear day. The Kahler Asten is also home to the highest spring in north-west Germany, the Lennequelle. You'll be surprised by the stunning scenery on every step of this hike.

You’ll find places to stop for refreshments and overnight accommodation at the start and finish of each stage. Remember to book your accommodation in advance, especially during the peak season. Alternatively, you can easily reach the stage towns by public bus. You can find the connections here: rlg-online.de/fahrgast/fahrt-planen (in German).

All you need are sturdy shoes, waterproof clothing, drinks, a few snacks and your camera – then you're ready to go. Have fun on the Hochsauerland ridge trail.

The enchanting Hochsauerland ridge trail begins in Züschen. Picturesquely located in the Nuhne valley, the small town extends up to the slopes of the mountains. If you like, you can visit Borg's barn - it is located in the village along the way - and be impressed by the small exhibition on the history

The second stage of the Hochsauerland Ridge Trail is relatively short at just over seven kilometers, but it has a lot to offer: beautiful high heathland paired with one of the highest mountains in the Rothaar Mountains and the highest spring in northwest Germany. We're talking about the heather-covered
