The Dolomites often conjure up images of difficult climbs and long hours in the saddle. But there's a hidden side to the Dolomites, one of quiet outings where you can enjoy the mountain scenery, the charm of Italian villages and the local cuisine

This Collection takes you to the province of Belluno, in the northeast of Italy, along a dream cycle route. Built in the 1960s on a former railway line, the route allows you to escape the traffic on simple dirt tracks. As such, I recommend a gravel bike with thick tyres.

Although it's always uphill, the Dolomites cycle route doesn't have any major climbs, so it’s suitable for cyclists of all abilities. The route passes through moderately populated and tourist areas so you won't have any problems finding somewhere to stay or eat.

The starting point is Calalzo di Cadore, whose station is the northern terminus of a regional train line to Padua. This town is also served by buses (it’s linked to the rest of Cadore by Dolomitibus) but there’s no convenient motorway. The finish is also well-served by public transport. From Passo Cimabanche, on the border with the province of Bolzano, several buses will take you back to your starting point in San Cassiano or Dobbiaco. There are frequent bus services and most of them allow you to take your bike with you.

Between the glamour of Cortina and the authenticity of a lesser-known region such as Cadore, this 50-kilometre (30 mi) outing will allow you to see some of the Dolomites' most famous peaks, such as Monte Cristallo and Tofane.

The Dolomites are waiting for you!
