Still present in many towns of the Valencian Country, camí assagador, or de l’assagador or assegador, or in Castilian azagador, refers to a type of medieval livestock route. Paths of a much more modest width than the canyades, in which the herd had to circulate in a row, one animal behind the other, from the Arabic saqa.

The predominant transhumance in the ancient kingdom of Valencia was given by the alternation of high mountain pastures in the interior and the low agricultural pastures of the coast. Every year thousands of heads of cattle had to cross many towns in a seasonal manner.
It is for this reason that this network of paths was formed, many times traced in a peripheral way, avoiding the main population centers and constantly crossing the radial paths coming from the towns.

In this way, the beasts, carriers of possible diseases, circulated at a certain distance from the villages, without altering their development and without assaulting the fields that surrounded them in their path to the mountains.

The legacy of this transhumance and its livestock routes is in some way also the origin of this route, in which starting from the sea, we will go in search of the interior mountain ranges of the Valencian territory, always avoiding where necessary the main roads and the large population centers, like animals, dirty and smelly, in search of fresher pastures.

Before leaving, do not forget to review the complete route. Divide it into the number of stages that best suit you, not only with your days off, but also adapting them to your physical condition. Likewise, plan the route well with regard to meals and, above all, water. Keep in mind that, although it is a route to enjoy throughout the year, bad weather can surprise you in the high areas, especially in winter. On the other hand, you will suffer strong heat waves in the summer months and end of spring.

Camí dels Assagadors is a route designed to be enjoyed in self-sufficiency. This implies taking advantage of the free shelters in the area, indicated in the description of each stage, as well as carrying the necessary material to carry out the overnight stay. Keep in mind that the shelters or areas where you camp must be left the same or better than they were. Consider arriving at a free shelter every night because free camping is prohibited throughout the country. If you prefer to stop in the towns to sleep in accommodations that offer, make the reservation in advance, especially in high season.

Enjoy this incredible circuit that will not only take you to discover some incredible landscapes, but also an area of which, surely, you have heard very little until now.
