As a child, I loved nothing more than playing on a riverbank. Between waterfalls, rocks, rock pools and streams – every day was a new adventure. Perhaps that’s why, even as an adult, I can’t resist a hike that brings me back to that same feeling; the sense of freedom and lightness. This Collection of five Tours was born out of my love for canyons, gorges, waterfalls, fjords and splashing water on a hot summer day. They are ideal day trips to relax in nature away from the city, even if only for a few hours.

The Province of Lecco, in the Lombardy region of Italy, is a wonderful hiking destination. Here, the abundance of water and the mountains plunging steeply into the lake form unique ecosystems. Rivers rush through gorges. A dialogue between rock and water, which you can carefully navigate on your adventure. Sometimes the rapids are calm, while other times, they’re ferocious.

The five Tours offer unique characteristics and landscapes. In Vedeseta, the predominant colour is green: the woods, mosses and lichens form a symphony of shades. Along the Valle dei Mulini in Cortenova, there’s a peaceful walk that’s suitable for families. For those who enjoy climbing and more challenging paths, I'd suggest the Vasche di Valmadrera and the Pools of Mandello. Easy to reach from Milan, Erve is ideal for a trip out of town, but if you prefer less crowded places, it might not be the best choice.

After your trips, don't forget to visit Lecco, the Lombard capital overlooking 'that branch of Lake Como that turns to noon'. Lecco has numerous accommodation options if you want to spend several days in the area. If you have time, I recommend a boat trip and getting to know the city, with its enchanting lakeside promenade.

The ideal season for these hikes is definitely summer, when nature is in its full splendour and when water is the most refreshing place to be. However, their low altitude and proximity to large cities such as Milan and Bergamo also make these Tours perfect for a short escape from the city at any time of year. The rivers can change considerably from season to season so be cautious, especially on the more challenging routes.

Whichever route you pick, get ready for an adventure amidst rushing torrents, splashing waterfalls and gushing springs. You can expect an immersion in nature where time seems to rewind and the magic of childhood returns.
