South of the Drôme lies verdant mountains where you smell lavender and hear the song of the cicadas from the wooded ridges. Most of this Collection takes place in this incredible landscape in southern France. I propose you follow the GR 429 for 49 kilometres (30 mi) from Dieulefit to Viviers in the Ardèche, passing from one region to the other.

I've divided this well-marked but little-travelled trail into two parts that are best suited to experienced walkers due to their length. That said, you can adapt the stages to your own ability and walk the route over three or four days.

The starting point is Dieulefit, a commune surrounded by sublime lavender fields that bloom from mid-June until the end of July. I recommend hiking during this period when the fragrant trails are a delight. You'll also be less likely to encounter the powerful Mistral wind, which makes some parts of this Tour more complicated. Whatever the season of your visit, you'll appreciate the beauty of this verdant adventure to the charming town of Viviers.

If you like nature and architecture, you’ll enjoy this route. From mountains such as Mont Rachas to historic churches such as the prieuré d'Aleyrac, the highlights are breathtaking.

Before embarking on this Tour, ensure you have enough water (especially in summer), food and good walking shoes. There are several accommodation options at the end of the first stage, around Montjoyer. If you wish to divide the route further, it's best to book your accommodation far in advance.

The nearest SNCF train station is in Montélimar. There are daily bus services to Dieulefit. Once there, you can easily reach the start of the route in an hour by following the GR 9.

This second stage of the GR 429 is ambitious but constitutes a beautiful bucolic walk through the forest, dotted with magnificent viewpoints. This route offers the opportunity to cross the border between Drôme and Ardèche by the suspension bridge of Viviers, your destination for the day.
