When the rugged Alps in the south slowly change into a gentle, hilly landscape and the odd vineyard appears, there’s a good chance you’ve landed in beautiful north-eastern Italy. Friuli Venezia Giulia, to be precise. This Collection explores close to the border triangle of Austria, Italy and Slovenia. This area is not always at the top of the list among mountain bikers, but that's exactly why it has its charm and plenty of unknown Highlights to discover.
The famous Soča Valley is just as much a part of this environment as the Mediterranean-looking Alpine foothills. The city of Udine, an important trading centre, is in the immediate vicinity and the hotspots of Venice and Trieste are not far away.
I’d like to introduce you to this area, as it’s a perfect destination for mountain bikers. If you explore this less-frequented region, you’ll find a lot of single tracks and natural trails. There are also several trail parks and local trail builders take care of their maintenance and repair. The small town of Cividale del Friuli is an excellent base for your next bike trip.
One of the absolute MTB highlights of this region comes right at the beginning: Mount Matajur and its trail MataDown (almost) of the same name are today's destination. With its 1,645 meters, the Matajur is the highest point in the vicinity and it is located in both Slovenia and Italy. With a whopping…

The tour starts in Cividale del Friuli in the direction of Monte Ioànaz and offers you the whole range of sporting challenges, mountain panoramas and downhill-oriented bike fun. Today's trail highlight: The Cobra Trail, which is part of the Natisone Bike Arena and leads from the top of Monte Mladesiena…

Get recommendations on the best single tracks, peaks, & plenty of other exciting outdoor places.
If you are looking for a little seclusion and at the same time a beautiful mountain panorama, then the circumnavigation of Monte Ioànaz is the right choice for you. Here it is rather rare to meet many people. The 1,169 meter high mountain is certainly not the highest in Friuli, but one of the highest…

The starting point of this tour is the center of Cividale del Friuli. First you follow the route along the mountain until you climb towards Monte dei Bovi and Monte Spelata. Of course, another trail awaits you on this tour, namely the Vernasso Downhill Track. It sounds worse than it is and is more likely…

The following applies to this tour: The trail is king! Let the cool routes put that obligatory grin on your face as you thunder down into the valley. A total of four trails are waiting for you - each with its own character and special challenges. While the Cobra Trail is a little more flowy and great…

Discover the eastern flank of the Natisone valleys and practice active relaxation on this beautiful tour, which offers a number of highlights: There is the relaxed cycling and warming up by the river, the Fiume Natisone. Then the ascent past Monte Suis, which is not excessive, but will also be steep…

"We give ourselves the full trail drone". This time on offer: The MataDown Trail, which this time has to be driven up. Therefore my unconditional recommendation: Only ride this tour with an e-bike, otherwise it will be more of a "hike-a-bike" route.
The so-called “uphill flow” has been in trend for e…

On this tour starting in Cividale del Friuli, a few meters of altitude are due. Hence my tip: In order to survive the 1,510 meter ascent, grab an e-bike if you can. The goal is the route around Monte Ioanis and Monte Clabuch. I also have a trail for you on offer: the moderately difficult Cobra Trail…

This tour finds just the right balance of sporting challenge, panorama and beautiful descent - without demanding too many meters in altitude for it. It starts again in Cividale del Friuli. You keep to the left of the river and look over to Monte dei Bovi, which will be your first destination. It can…

The almost 29-kilometer route starts relaxed next to the river and leads you over a trail and a climb to a beautiful ridge. On the way there you will pass Castelmonte, which is both a well-known destination and a starting point for hikes. Via the Trivio Trail you whiz back down into the valley, where…

If you're familiar with the Soča Valley, then you've probably heard about how beautiful it is. It is also nice that a foothill of this well-known valley is your stage destination on this tour. There are a few meters of altitude to overcome, but overall enjoyment is the priority. You drive from Cividale…

This tour is ideal for light mountain bikes or even gravel bikes. There is no hard trail on the menu here, more of a gravel route. And as a "main course" there is wonderful enjoyment of the surroundings on well-developed cycle paths.
Here you are really at the "sweet spot" between rustic alpine flair…

On this tour you cross a real gorge, drive across the border into Slovenia (and back again) and there are some trail treats in store. The first trail has the funny name "Fat Hans". I couldn't find out who that means, but maybe you have an idea? In any case, "Fat Hans" is not alone, because "Fit Helga…

This time you start a little further east of Cividale and are right in the middle of Wine Country. One cypress after the other and vineyards as far as the eye can see. A real feast for the eyes and definitely in the “pleasure tour” category. As a starting point, I have planned the Lonzano bus stop for…

On this route you will find out how "Agriturismo" is lived in Italy, you will see an imposing castle and you can let your gaze wander in all directions, because there is something to see everywhere. We are again east of Cividale del Friuli in slightly hilly terrain just before the Slovenian border. Your…
