This magnificent hike traces Germany’s Lahn River from the source until it flows into the Rhine. It takes you through a wonderful, varied landscape. Its source is surrounded by secluded, enchanting landscapes on the edge of the Rothaar Mountains. In the expanse of the middle Lahn Valley, you’ll roam through beautiful meadow landscapes. Rocks are piled on the banks in the lower Lahn Valley, creating a wild path that’s similar to a via ferrata or a gorge crossing.

Old castles, regal palaces and monasteries rise up along the banks and on the hillsides. Small villages and lively towns with a mediaeval centre lie along the river and you’re sure to receive a warm welcome from the locals.

In total, the Lahnwanderweg trail is around 290 kilometres (180 mi) long, with detours to train and bus stations adding several kilometres to the official distance. It’s up to you if you want to follow the 19 stages here or split them differently. In this Collection, each day is between 13 and 25 kilometres (8 and 15 mi) and you’ll clock up over 6,000 metres (20,000 ft) in altitude in total.

Almost every town along the Lahnwanderweg offers comfortable accommodation. However, make sure you book in advance, even if it’s not peak season. As each stage starts and ends at a train station or bus stop, you can also easily travel for day hikes.

You should always carry plenty of drinks and a snack with you, as refreshment stops are infrequent on some stages. But, you’ll always find a nice picnic spot where you can take a break and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.

Now, you're ready to go. I hope you enjoy your hike from the source of the Lahn to the Rhine.

The small spring pond of the Lahn is located very close to the 624 meter high Lahnkopf in the Rothaar Mountains. It is a lonely area - apart from a small hamlet with a forester's lodge and an inn, there is not much here that disturbs the nature and the peace. Wonderful for clearing your head. Enjoying

On this approximately 15 kilometer long stage you don't follow the Lahn directly, but rather hike through the hinterland - literally, because the wonderful landscape still belongs to the eastern part of the Hessian hinterland. And as befits a decent hinterland, there is a lot of wonderful nature, but

At just under 25 kilometers and a few meters in altitude, this stage is a bit of a challenge, but it is easily doable with a little sporting ambition. And it starts with a few highlights: the Elisabeth Church and the Marburg Landgrave's Castle. From the castle you can once again enjoy a magnificent view

This stage first takes you to the romantic valley of the salt flats, which was already described by Rilke as particularly charming. Of the once eight mills on the Salzböde, the Schönemühle and Schmelzmühle are now home to restaurants where you can treat yourself to hearty home cooking or coffee and cake

This stage is almost 15 kilometers long. It begins and ends in historic half-timbered towns, uses a historic and once very important trade route in parts and takes you through a valuable protected area for plants and animals. This almost 19 kilometer long stage is tough. Apart from the charming path through the foothills of the Taunus to the Lahn Valley and the Limburg Basin near Weilburg, there is a wonderful zoo, a sensational crystal cave and Weilburg Castle. The hike from Obernhof to Bad Ems is another stage with wonderful views, a venerable monastery, castles, medieval towns and lots of nature. But these highlights all want to be conquered by you: with a few meters of altitude, a short via ferrata section and a good 20 kilometers of route. Pack enough drinks
