In Trentino in Italy, you can ride carefree, far from any traffic. The Adige Valley is ideal for newbie cycle tourers who want to try a short two-day trip or for families. It’s less mountainous than much of the region.

The route is not overly difficult and runs almost exclusively on traffic-free roads. However, the first stage (which has more descent than ascent) is still about 85 kilometres (51 mi) long. The second stage has almost 1,000 metres (3,280 ft) of elevation gain. Whilst this isn’t really beginner level, there are still many reasons why the area is good for all abilities. The long cycle paths are detached from main roads, there are many places to stop, and there’s the possibility to break up the stages, as there’s lots of accommodation along the way.

The ride begins in Egna and ends in Trento. Once you reach the church of Sant'Apollinare, you’ll be in the Adige. Here you can either return back to Egna the way you came or ride to Trento station and take the train. Egna is well connected by rail and road (it’s on an exit of the Brenner motorway). For train timetables see: suedtirolmobil.info/en.

The best bike for this adventure is the one that’s comfortable for you and reliable. You ride along asphalt for at least 95% of the route, but wide tyres might suit you if you don’t care about speed. Take just the bare essentials with you, such as spare parts. You don’t need to carry much food as you’ll find restaurants, towns and bars every few kilometres.

Ideally, you should tackle this route in spring or summer, when the valleys are at their greenest. The low elevation and temperate water basins, however, mean you can tackle this adventure year-round.

Green as far as the eye can see and endless streams – perfect company for any cyclist.
