The Flow Vélo – a route that transports you

The name immediately catches the eye: the Flow Vélo sounds exotic. The use of ‘flow’ suggests smooth motion, as you’re transported efficiently from one place to another, like river water to the ocean. It’s a name that fits the character and experience of this beautiful route well.

The Flow Vélo links the Périgord to the Atlantic Ocean and crosses the département (or French county) of Charente over a total of 294 kilometres (182 mi), mostly along rivers. ‘Flow’ suggests the presence of moving water and, as you ride this route, it may feel as though you’ve been carried away by the current of the Charente, a particularly peaceful river that travels through some incredible landscapes.

Starting from Thiviers, you begin the journey at the entrance to the Périgord-Limousin regional nature park. Your destination is the island of Aix, with its beaches and idyllic atmosphere. Between the two? The AOC Cognac, which will delight spirit lovers; the Arsenal in Rochefort; a few bubbles in Angoulême, the city of comics; and many other nuggets.

The Flow Vélo is both chic and bucolic, with charming rural traditions and local gastronomy. Don't miss the opportunity to taste the regional delicacies throughout. The stages are quite short, allowing you to take the time to savour every moment in the saddle and every mouthful at the table.

Any touring bike will fit perfectly into the Flow Vélo terrain. A gravel bike, an all terrain VTC or a road bike with wide tyres will do. You can arrange to have your luggage transported by private companies, or fill panniers. There is no need to overload yourself, as long as you have waterproofs and a fleece for the evening. From spring to autumn – when the colourful landscapes come to life – is the best time for this adventure.

There are several accommodation options to suit your budget and wishes. The region is prepared to accommodate all types of bike travellers.

To get to the starting point, you can take the regional TER train to Thiviers from Angoulême, which is easily reached by TGV train. At the end of the route, Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée is served by the TER which takes you to Angoulême or La Rochelle.

It’s time to enter the flow!
