Both the Loire and the Rhône rivers host an exceptional natural and cultural heritage on their banks: magnificent landscapes, splendid castles, picturesque vineyards... I invite you to connect these two natural wonders with a bike trip.

The Via Fluvia connects the Loire and the Rhône, two rivers that never cross paths. This bike route was laid out on a former railway line and is part of the so-called Voies Vertes (green ways). For now, this route is relatively short, but an extension is planned. Even today, it leads through a multitude of breathtaking landscapes. You cycle between extinct volcanoes, cross valleys and gorges, roll through beautiful forests and climb the Monts du Pilat.

On the information boards that stand along the Via Fluvia, you can learn more about the route. They open a window into the past and tell of the time of the railway.

The route is perfect if you want to undertake a multi-day bike tour for the first time. It is also suitable for families and for experienced cyclists who want to ride a leisurely route. The route runs mostly on developed bike paths and occasionally on roads. In the future, the entire route is to run on bike paths.

I suggest riding the Via Fluvia over an extended weekend in three stages. This way you have enough time for stops to enjoy the view and visit the historical sights. However, you can also cover the route in one or two days. You can find more information about accommodations and catering in the descriptions of the individual stages.

Trekking bikes, gravel bikes, and mountain bikes are well suited for this route. I advise against racing bikes, as there are some unpaved sections that could become uncomfortable, unless you have the right tires.

In the region through which the Via Fluvia runs, there is a mild climate, so you can cycle well here all year round. I would recommend spring or autumn to avoid great heat and cold. Pay particular attention to the strong Mistral wind in the weather forecast, which can also become dangerous.

You can get to the starting point by train from Le Puy-en-Velay. The second stage ends in Annonay. That's where the bike path of the Via Fluvia currently reaches (Autumn 2022). This is therefore a good destination if you are cycling with children. The route passes by the bus station there. You can find information about the lines and timetables at: mairie-annonay.fr/Horaires-des-lignes-regulieres-de.html.

From Annonay, you can then cycle on the third stage to the Rhône. You cycle about 27 kilometers through the gorge of the Cance to Saint-Vallier-sur-Rhône. There is also a train station there.
