Rugged, lonely beauty; green valleys, barren moonscapes and crystal-clear mountain lakes. On this varied, multi-day mountain hike, you will be amazed from morning to evening in an area miles away from the hustle and bustle of the Hardangervidda, high above Setesdal in southern Norway — a place where you'll barely meet another soul. In the evening, a crackling fireplace and full supply chambers await you in well-kept huts. And, as these are usually open all year round for self-catering, you can simply enter without a key or registration and pay by app or credit card.

Just be sure to be aware of what you are getting yourself into: some of the stages of this hike are quite demanding and strenuous. You’ll wade through knee-deep rivers and muddy swamps, you’ll cross melting snowfields and you’ll scramble over slippery rocks — all in search of true adventure. Therefore, some outdoor experience is highly recommended, and good equipment is necessary. To avoid the sudden onset of snow and to stay clear during hunting season, the best time for your hike is between July and August.

The trail is very well signposted, marked with a red "T" or cairn. Nevertheless, there are some safety precautions to be observed, summarized on the Norwegian Hiking Association website: english.dnt.no/need-to-know.

Today you will meet the Lord of the Rings. At least that's what it feels like: At this great stage, variety is important. First you walk through a moonscape, over rock slabs and big snowfields. Even from a distance you can recognize the pass you will be walking over later. Once at the top you can let

Today, the path meanders snugly through a green, gnawed river valley past romantic mountain farms. But you still have to go up a bit, but soon you can go down to the valley as a reward. Through a mystical forest you will end up at the popular Bleskestadmoen hut.

Once you have fought the muddy paths at the beginning of the tour, you can shake your legs well on the leveled paths around a reservoir. After crossing small and larger streams, you will walk past waterfalls, accompanied by sheep, to the lodge. There you will have a great view of the Holmavatn lake.

If you have climbed the pass, today's only downhill. After the tour, the cars on the highway, which you can already guess, seem strange. The goal, the Haukeliseter hut, you can already see every now and then. On the descent, it is sometimes a bit crumbling, over large boulders, it is necessary to blaze
