Exploring magnificent hills and cliffs — France’s Vuache route
Between nature, history and gastronomy, the Vuache route (Le tour du Vauche) is the perfect itinerary for a weekend getaway. As its name suggests, the route is built around the Mont Vuache which dominates the Usses Valley from the top of its 1,101 metres (3,612 ft). It’s an opportunity to (re)discover the countryside close to the city, to ride along the edge of fields, orchards and forests, to cross a handful of beautiful villages and a portion of the ViaRhôna cycle path.
Most of this route is on small country roads, making it suitable for all types of bikes. Despite the short distances, don't forget to take a look at the difference in altitude before setting off. The trail presents some significant climbs that should not be underestimated but every effort has its reward: incredible views!
I chose to start and finish this tour of the Vuache at the railway station of Annecy, but you can of course start it from anywhere you want. Annecy’s train station is accessible by bus or by TER, if you are from the area, and by TGV if you come from further away. As far as accommodation is concerned, you’ll find several guesthouses in Vulbens as well as a gîte at the end of the first stage.
Although you can ride this route all year round, it’s all the more pleasant with coffee breaks on terraces, picnics in the sun and the pleasure of pedalling without worrying about the time of sunset. Opt for late spring to early autumn.
