Deep below ground and close to the sky - mountain biking in Koroška

Mountain Biking Collection by Koroška

The trails in the Bavarian and Austrian Alps are always too crowded for you? Then off to Slovenia, off to the Koroška region. Here you will find beautiful mountain bike parks, adventurous single trails and fast downhills. Can anything be better than this? In the Slovenian region of Koroška, the fun has only just begun. With an action-packed single trail ride deep underground in a former mine, a mountain bike adventure like no other awaits. And, that's not all the northern Slovenian region near the Austrian border has to offer...

Koroška is one of the most mountainous regions in Slovenia. Its characteristic white rocks contrast beautifully with the lush green of the deep, untouched forests which you can explore by bike. Along old cart tracks or narrow trails, you will work your way up to ridges which will reward you with breathtaking views, and you will most likely not meet a soul. Mountain biking in nature’s cradle – it doesn’t get nicer than that.

Although you may meet few cyclists along the way, the region is well adapted for bikers. There are many roads and paths with hardly any traffic that are perfect for cycling. You will also find more and more cycle paths that open up the great landscape between the Alps and the Drava. So, you will not only be in good hands on your mountain bike, your touring or racing bike can also help you make unforgettable memories.

Because the Koroška is so versatile, we present not only four exhilarating mountain bike routes but also great options for e-bikers and two wonderful routes for touring cyclists in this Collection. Action junkies as well as pleasure bikers and families travelling with kids will also get their money's worth. The possibilities for an unforgettable holiday on two wheels are almost endless!

With mountain bikes you usually drive over the mountains. Here is something different: Here you are driving in the mountain! Made possible by the abandoned mine Mežica. Where once lead and zinc were mined, today is a mountain bike trail network of the special kind. Most important utensil: your bike lights, preferably a helmet lamp (which you can borrow here, if you do not have your own).

The newest highlight is even more extreme: Over five debris with a difference in height of around 150 meters, the new Black Hole Trail offers you a big kick, even if you think you've already seen or driven everything. By the way, you will be accompanied by a guide on all trails so that everything runs smoothly - safety first, this is especially true underground.

Of course, biking underground is a bit special. But quite practical: it will definitely not rain here. In general, the "weather" here is predictable, because the temperature on the mining trails is constantly ten degrees. A long pants and a warm jacket make sense, but the rain jacket can safely stay at home.

You have to register your drive through the mountain. This can be done by e-mail or by phone. Depending on the size of the group, different prices result: 2-3 people pay 30 euros each. Up to 7 people, the fun costs 25 euros per person. Up to 14 people 22 euros per person and in groups that are larger, 20 euros per person payable.

By the way, after the tour, it is worth visiting the Mežica Mining Museum.

Finally, a video with the English Bikepro Olly Wilkins, who was already here and apparently had a lot of fun:

Picturesque forests and expansive meadows with the best views are the backdrop for this beautiful trail park near the Slovenian town of Prevalje, very close to the border with Austria. Here are about 21 kilometers of marked trails waiting for you and your enduro bike, spread over nine different routes. You can combine as you wish and have the choice between relaxed flowtrails and technical challenges.

All trails are connected by a kind of "shuttle way", over which you come quickly and reasonably relaxed up again and again to the summit. Apropos: Overall, there is a difference in altitude of 515 meters, so you can let it crash downhill well.

The trail park is perfect for getting to know the fantastic area here. A nice warm-up program, so to speak, before you dare to go on longer trips. Because there are plenty of cool trails outside of the park. For example, one of the longest flow trails in Europe awaits you on the neighboring Mount Peca!

This area has another advantage: the sun shines quite often here. Thanks to the favorable climatic situation, the season starts in April and extends to the first snow in November. By the way, you can also rent a bike here and there are guided tours offered.

The Pohorje is a densely wooded low mountain range in northern Slovenia, in the heart of which is the Kope Bike Park. Here are two routes waiting for you: The Flow Line is about 1.6 kilometers long and leads over a flowigen course partly through forest, partly open meadows.

The Pro Line, which is still built diligently, is aimed at experienced bikers and is accordingly more demanding. There you can drive over various bridges and jumps in the future and leave it on the downhill properly.

By chairlift you come back up and also there's everything in the park, what the biker's heart desires: You can even borrow a bike and the right equipment.

The bike park Poseka is located on the edge of the small town Ravne na Koroškem (German: Gutenstein), embedded in the beautiful landscape of Lower Carinthia (Koroška). Here are two routes waiting for you: "Šnel Pepi Flow" is a flow trail that offers fun for the whole family, but also for experienced bikers. You can slowly enjoy the flowy trail or take off at high speed, just as your riding style and mood dictate.

"Enduro Bavči" is the name of the second route and there it goes more to the point. Here you drive through very varied terrain, but always on natural ground. Technical forest passages alternate with open meadow pieces and elongated curves. Some experience on the bike can not hurt here.

On the trails of the park has already been several times a run to the Slovenian amateur enduro series "SloEnduro" instead. Overall, the bike park is rather something for drivers who like it natural and quiet. In addition there is a pump track. Upwards you come from your own muscle power, but the park costs no entrance fee.

Around the idyllic mountain village of Ribnica na Pohorju there is a dense network of marked bike trails, where every biker will surely find the right person. The Pohorje in the city triangle Maribor, Dravograd and Slovenske Konjice has especially adapted to the needs of e-bikers and has become a true paradise for MTB pedelecs.

This starts with many great touring suggestions with laps that can easily charge a battery, and continues with complete all-round carefree packages with guided tours, driving technique training and cozy accommodation including meals. On request shuttle trips are offered, which deliver you almost directly on the trail and the area is well supplied with bike shops and battery charging stations. All you have to do is sit on the bike and enjoy - the rest is done!

All information about the area and special e-bike offers can be found here: blackpeak-ebike.com.

Intermediate bike ride. Good fitness required. Mostly paved surfaces. Suitable for all skill levels.

This bike tour follows one of the most beautiful routes in Slovenia. It leads on a former railway line, which was developed on 24 kilometers as a perfect bike path.On the way, you will come again and again through beautiful villages such as Otiški Vrh, Slovenj Gradec, Mislinja and Gornji Dolič, which invite you to take a rest and to get to know the culture and the people of the region. Again and again you enjoy - as from the bridge in Slovenj Gradec - a fantastic view, two tunnels provide on the road for a touch of adventure. There are various rest areas along the route where you can stop. The route is largely separate from the traffic and is paved throughout. The course of the old railway line is relatively flat, even if there are just under 300 vertical meters between start and finish. When you start in Mislinja, it's almost always slightly downhill. So this tour is especially for families with children pure enjoyment. On the way you have great views of the Pohorje and the Pleßberg. In Slovenj Gradec a detour to the medieval old town is highly recommended. On the way back you can take the Štrekna bus, which is equipped with a bicycle trailer and takes your bike free of charge. If you would rather continue cycling, you can continue your tour on the Drauradweg: komoot.de/tour/93307890.More information about the route can be found here: strekna.si.

Expert bike ride. Very good fitness required. Some portions of the Tour may be unpaved and difficult to ride.

The Drauradweg leads from the source of the river in Italy through the Austrian Carinthia to Slovenia and from there on to Croatia, where the Drava at Osijek flows into the Danube. The bike path is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Europe: it leads mostly through specially built bike paths or quiet side roads through beautiful, varied landscapes and cultural hotspots such as Spittal, Villach, Dravograd or Maribor. One of the most beautiful sections, but also the most demanding, is the track on Slovenian soil: The ride between Podvelka and Lovrenc na Pohorju requires due to many gradients a certain basic condition. But you will be rewarded richly. You drive through a narrow, forest-lined valley with many small streams and impressive castles and palaces. You cycle through dreamy villages and can look forward to a stage destination, where it is much more lively: Europe's cultural capital of 2012, Maribor, is one of the highlights along the route. Also, if you can not get enough of cycling, we have a special tip for you here: it's worth it to experience a stretch of the water. On the Drau, the rafter was once a common sight. Today, you can swap your bike for a raft and recapture the activity of this ancient craft a bit. If you are looking for more action on the water, we recommend a round of rafting on the Drava instead. The Drauradweg offers itself as a stage trip. If you want to drive the Slovenian part in four days, you could, for example, in Radlje ob Dravi, Maribor and Ormoz. The way to Maribor runs the way, the Drautal-Bahn, which is always a nice backup, in case your plans should change. In Dravograd you have access to the Štrekna railway path: komoot.de/tour/93307257.
